The 18th of February 2017 will remain indelible in the minds of the staff and students and indeed, of the residents of Umualum Nekede, since it was the day Claret Secondary School Nekede, held her second Inter House Sports Competitions, celebrated in an atmosphere of joy and resounding jubilation. The event which took place at the play round of the Claretian Institute of Philosophy, Maryland Nekede, wrapped up the series preparatory and sporting events characteristic of secondary school inter house sports competitions. The entire fiesta featured the major throws – Shot put, Discus and Javelin; Volleyball, Badminton, Table Tennis and the major races.
While delivering the homily at the Eucharistic Celebration that marked the opening of the grand finale, the Provincial Superior of the Claretian Missionaries, East Nigeria Province, Very Rev. Fr. Simeon Nwobi, CMF who presided over the Mass urged the students to compete in the games with a spirit of determination and sportsmanship. He called on them to see the event as a replica of our universal call to clinch the glory that awaits us in heaven. Before the final blessing, Fr. Dr. Anselm Amandikwa, CMF (Provincial Director of Claretian Schools) thanked the staff and students for their contributions in preparing for the event. He called on all the students to cherish constant the holistic education that the school offers and to see the games as a way of showcasing their talents and skills.
In his welcome address at the second phase of the celebration, the Director of the school, Fr. Stan Ekwujuru, CMF described the mission of the school with reference to a key phrase in the school’s anthem; home of holistic learning. He listed the numerous benefits inherent in exercises such as: maintaining physical fitness and mental alertness. Furthermore, games he said trigger a sense of healthy competition and team spirit and arouse a sense of leadership, planning, strategizing and followership among the students. Among the dignitaries at the occasion was the Deputy Governor of Imo State, His Excellency Prince Eze Madumere who was represented by the TC Chairman of Owerri West LGA, Hon B.B. Ibekwe. Also in attendance was the Representative of the Commissioner for the Education, Mr. Charles Osuoha (the PTA Chairman and Chairman of the Occasion), The Director of the Education Commission of Owerri Archdiocese, Rev. Fr. Dr. Victor Eleba, Fr. Mr. Linus Njoku, some members of the State Sports Council and host of Head Teachers, Claretian associates and parents of the students. Among the invited secondary schools who also competed at the vent were; Claret Academy (Sec. Sch.) New Owerri, Father Cloonan Memorial College, Holy Rosary College Avu, Owerri Girls Secondary School and Assunpta Girls Model Sec. Sec.
In his speech, Rev. Fr. Dr. Victor Eleba thanked the staff and students of the school for putting together such an awesome event. He called on all present to appraise the state of education in the country and especially in the State. He invited parents, teachers and guests to work towards improving the standard of education as to safeguard the future of our children and of our dear nation since education remains crucial in the process of nation building.
The sports fiesta ended with the awarding of prizes to houses and individual athletes who distinguished themselves in different field and track events. In a closing prayer led by VRF Simeon Nwobi, CMF, he thanked God for clement weather and for hitch free celebration. He prayed God to lead each one safely to his destination. The event came to a close around 4:30pm.
