City-MUN (Model United Nations) is a UN organized annual academic exercise where students from different schools across the country step into the shoes of the United Nations Ambassadors as delegates. It’s an avenue where delegates (student participants) are given the chance to collaborate and to discuss solutions to rising global issues. It gives delegates networking opportunities, world class recognition and also, participants acquire (astute) leadership, diplomatic and lobbying skills.
The City MUN 2023 conference was held in different cities in Nigeria, which includes: Abuja, Lagos and Uyo. The theme for the Abuja conference held at Chida Events Centre, Utako, Abuja was, ‘Ensuring Universal Access to Affordable, Reliable and Modern Energy Services’.
It was quite an exciting adventure which has brought to lime light the salient talents possessed by students of both schools who distinguished themselves in marveling ways. Claret Academy Secondary School Area “A” New Owerri came out overall best with her students bagging various awards and prices. Hence, Ugorji Prosper won the best male delegate while Elleora Chukwuka bagged the best female delegate award. Muoghara Onyekachi Joseph, Chike Chioma and Shelter Okeke emerged as the best committee delegates. More so, Muoghara Onyekachi and Elleora Chukwuka were elected City – MUN 2024 Secretary General and Deputy Director respectively. Finally, the Claretian University Secondary School Nekede bagged first price for Social and Cultural display and came overall second in the competitions. Her students, Ugochukwu Jeffrey and Nwanja Iruka were awarded for outstanding performances in their various groups.
The encounter has been a memory making experience for the students and they expressed appreciation to their schools directors Rev. Fr. Ernest Offor, CMF who led the delegation to Abuja for the event, Rev. Fr. Callistus Emenyonu, CMF and the organizers of the conference for the knowledge, experience and exposure gained. The vision of Claretian Schools is to offer our young people a holistic education that forms them into polished and responsible human beings, valuable to themselves, their families and to the society at large. This event has served as a step in the right direction towards fulfilling this dream.
The conferences came to a close on the 11th June and the delegates from the different schools made their way back. The dominant sentiment around the participants from Owerri is that they went, they saw and they conquered. They made history as champions for City International Model United Nations Conference 2023.
